On June 6, President Joe Biden's administration announced a new initiative to emphasize alternatives to single-use plastics in government procurement, the first major federal contracting regulation to target plastic waste. The regulation will go into effect on July 8, 2024
Under the U.S. General Services Administration's (GSA) June 6 finalization of single-use plastic packaging rules for federal supply programs, products that do not have any single-use plastic packaging in the federal government's procurement system will soon be marked with an icon. The icon is intended to encourage federal agencies to phase out the use of single-use plastics by taking this into account in their purchasing decisions.
This, the regulation says, “will reduce the government's waste generation and potentially save industry partners money by reducing unnecessary packaging.”
